Hi we

Welcome to Day 4 of 5 Secrets to Japanese Cooking!

A quick glance at Japanese recipes, you'll find two Japanese pantry staples that are indispensable – sake and mirin.

Along with soy sauce, they are the secret in making the amazing teriyaki sauce!

SECRET #4: SAKE & MIRIN

So, what is sake? What is mirin?

Sake is commonly known as Japanese rice wine, and mirin is known as sweet Japanese rice wine. Both offer great benefits in cooking such as:

  • enhance the overall flavor and aroma of a dish
  • use in marinades or as a glazing agent
  • tenderizes meat
  • adds umami and sweetness to soup stocks, sauces, and grilled dishes

What are the differences between the two? Are there any non-alcohol substitutes?
