A new CEO at Danone On Tuesday, Danone, which saw investor criticism of its performance lead to the departure of its CEO earlier this year, named its new chief exec. Outgoing Barry Callebaut boss, Antoine de Saint-Affrique, is to take the helm at the Activia and Alpro maker, replacing Danone veteran Emmanuel Faber, who left in March. Former Unilever executive de Saint-Affrique will likely be reflecting that he's taken on the top job at a company with an investor base demanding an improvement in its financial performance – as well as being one that has already confirmed its "Local First" strategy and its sustainability agenda, both of which were headed by Faber, are to be retained. While investors are not unhappy with Danone's ambitions in regard to its ESG strategy, at the same time they have sought new ideas to address what they perceive to be an undervalued share price and under-investment in brands and innovation. It will be on getting this balance right that de Saint-Affrique will be judged and the French national will likely have to be seen to be succeeding relatively quickly if he is to appease previously fractious shareholders and convince previously doubting analysts the new sheriff in town can turn things around. Just Food analysis: High expectations – the challenge facing new Danone CEO Antoine de Saint-Affrique The week ahead The new-look Just Food will still have its usual must-read diet of news, analysis and commentary next week. On our analysis pages, we'll be exploring how packaged-food groups are organising their office staff after more than a year of largely working from home. What have been the impacts on areas such as innovation, strategy, recruitment and company culture? Contributing editor Ben Cooper will be reflecting back on the change at the top at Danone and asking what that means more broadly for the type of business model championed by Faber. How likely is it another multinational food CEO will now attempt anything anywhere near as radical in the wake of his departure? And, on our opinion pages, Just Food's US columnist Victor Martino will be setting out what he believes are the five hot trends shaping the packaged-food market Stateside right now.
