| Happy November, - Yowza that November is here, eh? My Dad always told me that you know you're getting old when all you talk about is the weather and how fast time seems to whiz by. Did I mention as I write this, it's snowing here in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado? 🤣 But seriously... even though we aren't closing the books on 2021 just yet, I like to encourage "reflection time" throughout each year. This is especially important for those of us working on health and performance goals. It's common for our human brains to dwell on the end points and outcome goals, rather than putting our brain energy into the process and journey. We think: Did we achieve the goal or not? Did we lose the game or not? In contrast to: How was the preparation for this gig? Did my habits and routines support what I hoped to achieve? As much as I believe in the importance of our nutrition patterns contributing to our well-being, longevity, and robustness as active and athletic individuals, I would be remiss to neglect the behaviors, habits, and routines in and around our daily living. And that's where a lot of the real work happens... the nitty gritty work of behavior change. It's one thing for us Mechanics to say "Yo, eat more broccoli!!" and a whole other thing to dig deeper into the realm of "Let's brainstorm together on ways to better meal plan, adjust your daily food routine to increase vegetable intake, and work on minimizing the barriers that are getting in the way of more veggie chomping." See the difference? So whether are not you are currently working on any specific health or performance goals, take some time to ponder whether you could actually benefit from a focus on this foundational piece of modifying behaviors around your health and performance. Often times, we think the food is the problem. When actually, it is our behaviors that need the attention first. |
