The Nutrition Mechanic Toolbox πŸ› πŸ₯•

Tinkerings from the Toolbox

Hi there  -

This month, the Nutrition Mechanic Team is sharing a weekly post of "Favorites of 2021 and Must-Haves for 2022".

Our first post features each Dietitian's top 3 current favorite kitchen gadgets. These are utensils, accessories, and small appliances that make our food prep more efficient and even adds some fun into the mix.

Here's a snippet from the Team:
  • From Kristin: Instant-read Thermometer Poke and thump all you want, but you cannot tell how cooked something is by squishing it with your finger. I've never met anybody whose prodding could tell the difference between an undercooked 190ΒΊ bread loaf and a finished 200ΒΊ loaf. You know what can? An instant-read thermometer. I rely on mine to tell me when my salmon is ready to come out of the oven and whether or not my sourdough needs a few more minutes. So, unless you have some amazing superpower, buy yourself one of these thermometers. Here's the top-of-the-line version.
  • From Maggie: Silicone Food Covers These nifty little guys have become so useful in the kitchen for me. If you have read my blog on food waste, you will know why, but they really are handy for leftovers or when you just can't quite finish that bowl of ice cream (say what?!). They're also great not only for reducing waste, but they go right in the dishwasher for an easy cleanup too!
  • From Dina: GoStak From the Blender Bottle company, these different size stackable containers are great for the lunch box, snack bag, or keeping portion sizes legit (for me, the nuts and trail mix needs to be monitored). This was a gift from a client long ago and one that I cherish for its versatility. Oh, and they're cute too.
In the previous newsletter, I hinted that gadgets and gizmos don't inherently solve many of the barriers we have to making progress (in this case, let's refer to food prep). However, they absolutely can be part of establishing and mastering a habit by making the habit easier

Check out our other faves on the blog and let us know what your favorite gadgets are or what's on your wish list.

NEW SPORTS NUTRITION PODCAST

I kept it a secret for a long while, but I've wanted to do a podcast for years. However the "stars got aligned" thing works in life, the stars got aligned to make this happen. πŸ˜‚ I'm delighted to announce the launch of the "Inside Sports Nutrition" podcast with my co-host Bob Seebohar.

We've got weekly podcasts featuring interviews with researchers and a variety of athletes, discussions and debates on hot sports nutrition topics, listener Q&A, and stories from the field. We'd love for you to check us out and subscribe. We're on all major pod platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

GIFTS!

  1. I wanted to give a quick shout out to my dear friend, Kim Levinsky, and her custom handcrafted wood art. Kim's Etsy store, STRSquatchShop, has a ton of unique gifts for outdoorsy people, including runners and other endurance athletes. She can also work with you to make your idea come to life for an extra special gift for your friends, family, and even a Secret Santa. Let's support her super cool small business! πŸ™ŒπŸ½
  2. And if you're like me, gift cards are a favorite gift to give for their flexibility (it's not lazy, right??). The Nutrition Mechanic has a current 10% savings special on e-gift cards if purchased before December 6th, 2021. You can even by one for yourself if you like! Consider it a unique gift of health and we build in some fun at no charge. πŸ˜‚
  3. We also have a limited quantity of custom Nutrition Mechanic performance visors (made by our pals over at BOCO Gear). We'll ship it to ya along with the snazzy "Tools for Life" sticker shown below for $25 by US Postal Service (shipping included in price for standard shipping in the continental USA).
