We use food inappropriately for many reasons. Many of us are self described foodies or even sugar addicts. Those things can be true, but it's not WHY we have a dysfunctional relationship with food. The dysfunctional relationship is because we are looking for food to DO something FOR us that it's not designed to do. We turn to food for comfort/soothing, reward, entertainment, to relieve stress, to cope with sadness, to celebrate - and these dysfunctions lead to our body not being able to metabolically cope. Whatever your individual reasons are for using food for something other than true hunger, just know that you are not broken; this is not a character flaw! Food addiction and eating disorders are nothing to be ashamed of. In most cases we can heal the damage to our health, we can heal our mind, AND change our perspective and behavior with the right tools. |
