New Recipes from Mama Lin & A Few Life Updates

View email in your browser

With a blink of an eye, it's already November! It's been a few months since my last newsletter, and a lot has happened over here. First of all, my husband and I bought a house! It was a long and stressful process, but I'm glad it's over. Now, we wait for the kitchen remodeling process to finish before we move in.

The week after we got the keys to the house, my family visited, and my mom prepared a lot of food to eat at the new house. It was a lovely, unofficial housewarming gathering.

And it was my birthday yesterday! My family visited over the weekend and I ate so much. Whenever my mom and sister visit, they cook up a storm in my kitchen, and I just stand back and assist as needed.

Mama Lin prepared pineapple cakes, which were wonderful. I was so impressed that my mom made EVERYTHING from scratch. She even got pineapple-shaped molds so that she can make the cakes in the shape of a pineapple. I'll be asking my mom to teach me how to make these soon!

I baked Asha Loupy's Spiced Apple Galette yesterday, and it's absolutely delicious! The crust was flaky and crisp and I loved the spices in the apples. I highly recommend making this for your holiday gatherings!

New Recipes

I shared a few new recipes recently, all of which are great weekend cooking projects:

Hope you try them soon!

mama lin's taro cake

Taro cake (芋頭糕 or 芋頭糍) is a southern Chinese steamed cake that you can often find in dim sum restaurants. Mama Lin's taro cake is my absolute favorite. The cake is filled with earthy diced taro and topped with a mixture of ingredients that pack an umami punch: Chinese sausage, Chinese cured pork, dried shrimp, and dried scallops.

mung bean cakes

These mung bean cakes (綠豆糕) are a delightful dessert that is not too sweet. The cakes have a red bean paste filling, but you can leave out the filling if you want something simpler. Serve them at room temperature or chilled in the refrigerator.
