Get Organized and Eat Better: Simple Tips for 2023

Happy New Year! A new year is always a great time to reset for me. The clutter, chaos and glutton of the holiday season is over and it is time to start with a fresh clean slate.

The first place I start is with my house. I like to think of it as my 'Spring cleaning in January'. A clean organized space can give you a sense of well-being and make it easier to function.

Having an organized kitchen can make it easier to make healthy food choices and support your health goals. These are some simple ways to organize your kitchen this new year:

  • Go through your pantry. Throw away any old or expired items. You don't need them and they are taking up valuable space! Consider investing in clear storage containers that make it easy to see at a glance what you are running low on. These airtight containers also help your food stay fresh longer! Throw away extra packaging, and have baskets or bins to organize things like applesauce pouches, fruit snacks, granola bars, etc.
  • Organize your drawers. Drawers seem to be a catch-all for any random cooking utensil that doesn't have anywhere else to go. Can openers, potato mashers, measuring cups, cheese graters.. Go through and get rid of any items that you aren't utilizing. I had about 7 spatulas, but I only ever used three of them! The other four went into the donation pile. Consider finding a place for things that you need but seldom use. My candy thermometer and turkey baster are both valuable, but only get used once or twice a year. I keep these with a number of other items in a tub in the pantry to make it easier to find what I'm looking for in my kitchen drawers.
  • Clean out your fridge. Go through all the items in your fridge (even those old condiments) and determine what food needs to be thrown out. Follow it up with a good wipe down of the shelves. Consider getting a few clear bins to keep things organized in your fridge.
