Hey E, When working with a new client, helping them clarify their goals is a great first step… but where do you go from there? How do you turn “I want to lose 20 pounds of body fat” into “This is what I’m doing today to make progress”? If you’re unable to break down your client’s goals into bite-sized pieces, sooner or later they’ll feel discouraged and deflated… and so will you. We never want that to happen. So today we’re sharing our secret blueprint for making any goal less intimidating—and more achievable. (We’ve used this to help over 100,000 nutrition coaching clients reach their health and fitness goals. Now over 150,000 PN Certified Nutrition Coaches are using it with their own clients.) Introducing the “Goals, Skills, Practices, Actions” blueprint. You can use this to literally achieve any goal—whether that’s learning to play “I’m Yours” on the ukulele, becoming a confident nutrition coach, or helping your clients eat, feel, and live better. Here’s how it works: Step 1. Identify your (or your client’s) goals—what you want to move towards. Step 2. Break those goals into skills—the abilities, competencies, or capacities required to do that thing, or move in the desired direction. Step 3. Break skills into practices—exercises and applications that help build the skills. Step 4. Break practices into actions—small, specific, concrete tasks that you (or your client) can easily do daily, or as often as possible. These eventually become habits—automatic behaviors that are seamlessly ingrained into everyday life. Let’s look at a quick example: Goal: “Eat better consistently so I can lose weight.” Skill: Regulate eating behaviors. Practice: Eat slowly and mindfully. (We teach coaches how to help their clients do this inside the PN Nutrition Certification.) Daily action: At each meal, put your utensils down between each bite, and take at least one breath. Of course, this^ isn’t the only practice needed to lose weight. But it’s one of the important ones. Once practiced for a couple weeks, you can then “stack” a new practice on top of it… and so on. Before long, you’ll start to notice that you (or your clients) are getting closer and closer to the goal—all by practicing one small habit at a time.
