We were going along just fine, dealing with a gluten intolerance and egg allergy, when boom! We were surprised with a tree nut allergy. My son reacted to some muffins I had made, and it was very scary.
This was several years ago now, but I can clearly remember how it felt like my world was just turned upside down.
For a while, making food felt scary -and mealtime certainly was not very fun. What would he react to next? Was there any of the allergen left in my kitchen, waiting to cross contaminate something? I was watching him like a hawk while we were eating.
If you are feeling this way, I understand. I know how a new diagnosis can turn your world upside down.
We did a few things to cope with these issues.
- We stuck to simple meals at first. I mean really simple, like roasted chicken and mashed potatoes that I made myself.
- I called and double checked on the brands of packaged products that I was using. This was for my own peace of mind. I needed to know that these products were still safe.
- We didn't try any new brands for a little while.
- There were a couple of pans that I felt were not safe, since they had been used with that allergen pretty heavily. I passed them on to someone else. This was for my peace - I needed to feel that my kitchen was safe and uncontaminated.
- We had fun trying new recipes with safe brands ONLY when we felt ready. There was a period of being cautious.
- Once we were ready, we all tried new things, and learned that life would still be good and fun, even with this new allergy to cope with. I had fun making many of the recipes you see on my blog!
You are not alone, friend! This is hard, but you can do it.
