One of the biggest questions people have when it comes to the work I do is this:
Will it work?
Most people I work with have a LOOOONNNNNGGG history of trying and things not working.
A long list of feeling hopeful, motivated and inspired - all ready to get started with here whole30/keto/veganism/ditching sugar/juice fast/whatever...only to be left feeling the same.
Either because you couldn't keep up with the demands OR because you did exactly but saw no results.
This was me years ago when I tried implementing the Ketogenic diet. I had read and written a paper for Uni on it - so knew the research was great. So I implemented a whole food, a non-processed, dairy-free, high-fat, low-carb way of eating, I measured my ketones, I ate vegetables and I did it properly.
What happened?
I gained about a stone in weight.
My energy did not improve - it got worse.
My mood got worse.
And I made zero progress.
Is it NOT because all the research is WRONG. No....it just wasn't right for me.
The ketogenic diet was not the solution to the actual problem I had. Sure it might be someone else's solution but it wasn't MINE.
So how can you know something WILL WORK?
It's simple:
- You find out what the main problems are. List out, in priority order, what is really out of balance and what your symptoms mean.
- You target those things strategically. With my clients, I use nutrition, lab tests, supplement and lifestyle shifts to create big changes in their bodies in 2-3 months.
- You get support. Creating change often requires support, consistently requires accountability, mindset and lifestyle shifts require coaching and gentle challenge, behaviour change requires encouragement and reminders.
This is how you know 'it will work.'
Cos I can tell you, randomly picking strategies that 'sound good' WILL NOT WORK.
Applying fads, trends, or going back to old strategies that worked once (but did they really?) before - will not work.
But when we treat our bodies with the same love and logic that we would do our cars, or kitchens - in that we find out what the problem is - things change!
When we undo the YEARS of oppression that told us to neglect/ignore/disconnect from our bodies and decide to take our bodies and our symptoms SERIOUSLY and take the time to learn what is really going on - things change!
IT WILL WORK.
It's like a magic formula!
