#FoodAllergyChampions: Meet our 2021 community award winners + last chance to enter our contest

Food Allergy Canada is a nationally registered charity committed to educating, supporting, and advocating for the more than 3 million Canadians impacted by food allergy.

A perfect way to end this year’s Food Allergy Awareness Month is to focus on how we are all working together to drive impact.

This award recognizes an individual who has made a unique contribution to the lives of Canadians with food allergy through their efforts in education, advocacy, community building, leadership, or fundraising.
Dr. Waleed Alqurashi

Dr. Waleed Alqurashi is a pediatric emergency physician at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and investigator at the CHEO Research Institute, in Ottawa, Ontario.

Dr. Alqurashi has been unfailing in his commitment to improving the management of anaphylaxis, particularly in emergency departments. He has championed many initiatives to address knowledge gaps among physicians and patients in treating anaphylaxis.
 
His continuous dedication to improving anaphylaxis management in children is significant.
This award recognizes special individuals and organizations for their extraordinary contribution and leadership in helping individuals and families affected by anaphylaxis. 
Anglophone South School District

Anglophone South School District in Saint John, New Brunswick has demonstrated exemplary passion and commitment to raising food allergy awareness and creating safer school communities.

This award recognizes two individuals in post-secondary school who have contributed significantly to the Canadian food allergy community. This award is made possible through an educational grant from TD Securities.
Marissa Kaminski
Marissa is a student at the University of British Columbia and a Child Development Supervisor in an after-school care program in Richmond, BC. Although she does not have food allergy herself, she is inspired to help support others living with the condition.

Passionate about raising food allergy awareness and reducing risk, Marissa helped develop interactive and informative workshops and training to educate school staff about anaphylaxis, risk reduction, and emergency protocols.
Ella VanderLelie
Ella is from Burlington, ON who will be entering her first year at Brock University this fall. Ella has food allergies to egg, milk, peanut, tree nuts and legumes.

Advocating for change, Ella has led several initiatives in her community including a school-wide allergy-awareness assembly, and a deputation to Burlington City Council in support of stock epinephrine (an epinephrine auto-injector that is not prescribed to a specific person and can be used in an emergency) being available in public spaces. Ella also participated in our educational video where she shared her reaction story and lessons learned to empower other youth to Know and Treat anaphylaxis.
This award provides two grants for graduate students, medical students or healthcare professionals who have an interest in food allergy/anaphylaxis. The funds help to offset expenses for attending an academic program or event related to food allergy.
Connor Prosty

Connor is a medical student at McGill University. He will be using the grant to attend the 2022 American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
Rishma Chooniedass

Rishma is a nurse, working in the Food Allergy Immunotherapy program at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital. She used the grant to attend the 2021 American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology Annual Conference.
