Excited to smash your 2023 goals?
It’s easy to charge into the new year full-force, thinking about all the things we want to—or think we “should”—do.
If that’s you, it might help to think about 2022 first.
“We need to remind ourselves how far we’ve come (and celebrate that) instead of constantly feeling far away from an ever-moving goal,” says PN co-founder Dr. John Berardi.
So before racing towards your 2023 goals or resolutions, take a few moments to look back on the past year and all you’ve accomplished.
Then, consider how you’ll approach the goals that lie ahead.
This practice is both encouraging and strategic.
It’ll help you feel good about everything you’ve done this past year, even if you feel like there’s more you *wish* you achieved. Plus, it sets an intentional tone for the year to come.
(Tip: This is a great exercise to do with clients, too. Follow the prompts below with them every few weeks, or include at the end of a transformation contest.)

(BTW, this advice comes straight from Dr. Berardi’s bestselling book, Change Maker.)
Review the prompts below, and jot down your answers in a journal, notebook, document, or note-taking app.
Step 1: Look Back
Over the past year…
▶What have you put the most effort into?
Are there certain goals, skills, or projects you’ve worked hard on?
▶What are you most proud of?
Small wins count!
▶What more would you have liked to accomplish?
We often wish we could have done more. Acknowledge that, then let it go.
👉🏾 Now that you’ve reflected a little, consider how you might high-five yourself for the great work you’ve done.
Think about how you’ll celebrate your progress, even if it’s just a small reward that supports your goals.
Step 2: Look forward
Looking ahead to the next year…
▶What are you most looking forward to?
What goals, challenges, or projects are you excited about and ready to tackle?
▶What advantages do you think you have that’ll make progress more likely?
Consider what unique abilities or superpowers you possess that could help you out.
▶What things are likely to stand in your way?
Are there any obstacles you can anticipate in advance?
▶How can you prepare, right now, to make sure those things don’t get in your way?
Having listed obstacles that might stand in your way, think about how you’ll prevent them from sabotaging you.
