Today, I'm going to do what I do most days of the year: Swing my legs out from beneath the warm covers, pad to the kitchen, pat my dog while I wait for the coffee to brew, then stick a slice of good bread in the toaster. I am a creature of habit, which is why I love the first day of a new year. It's a day for returning to routine after a month of chaos, cookies, and cheer. It's a day for mixing up some dough so we have sandwich bread for when my kids — at long last — return to school this week. And though the celebrations may be over, we can't be expected to go cold turkey on sweets. Instead of the lavish chocolate and spiced specialties of the holidays I'm going to make a simple loaf of banana bread with a bit of white whole wheat flour in the mix (for flavor, not resolutions!). And maybe I'll bake some nutty biscotti, which will keep well beyond Twelfth Night and are great with my daily afternoon tea (creature of habit!). Speaking of Twelfth Night, we've got some recipes for that celebration, too, should you be so inclined, including an Almond Galette (Galette des Rois), made with a flaky sour cream pastry and almond paste, and this Three King's Cake (Rosca de Reyes) filled with dried fruit and nuts. And should this day find you a bit more foggy-brained that usual, keep supper simple: maybe this savory Dutch baby with herbs and parmesan, or this garlicky skillet corn tamal and a big salad. Wishing you all a brilliant start to the New Year, |
