How many times have you recognized a place in the movie you are watching, saying "I've been there," and talking about Milan, most likely the phrase will be, "I've been there, and they totally cleaned me out of all my cash." Because, as we know, being an off-campus student, especially a freshman, means having a night out at Gatto and then eating bread and sawdust for the rest of the month. But we're not here to complain, because we love our Milan, which welcomes everyone indiscriminately.
Today we propose 5 bars and restaurants that have been the setting for a film.
Fonderie Milanesi in Superheroes (2021)
Such a poignant ending should be found in the pages of criminal law manuals. Alessandro Borghi and Jasmine Trinca together to make us cry more than the statistics grade, the film is set in Milan, and actually one can recognize several bars and restaurants.
In the opening scene, the two protagonists take shelter under the porch of Gino 12 on Naviglio Pavese, an extremely trendy bar and restaurant with its drinks all based on Gin(o) Tonic and with irreverent names. A great spot if you just finished your aesthetics exam with the legendary Gino Secondo Zaccaria. The location where our beautiful couple meets is the Milanese foundries, which if I had to describe in one word, would probably be "amaziiiing."
For those of you who have the Icos as an extension of your hands, the foundries should be a meeting point like the Korova Milk Bar for the droogs of 'A Clockwork Orange'.
God save the food in "My Brother Has Arrived"
If this movie were a dish, it would be a delicate dessert, despite dealing with a thorny theme in a realistic way. Renato Pozzetto, the unmistakable author of the expression "Taaaaac," which is imperative to know if you want to survive in Milan, is the protagonist of the comedy "My Brother Has Arrived" (1985). Pozzetto plays twin brothers Ovidio and Raffaele, the former a monotonous teacher and the latter a piano bar musician in a disreputable establishment.
The Blue Peacock, the nightclub where the artist performs, is now God Save The Food - Brera, located in Piazza del Carmine, a highly renowned bar-restaurant among the nightlife spots in Milan. Another location immortalized in the film is the famous and enduring Bar Magenta, located in Via Giosuè Carducci, where the rogue brother has his hand roasted by a criminal, something that an 'Afc' student would prefer to continuing university studies.
Osteria del Generale in Benvenuti al Nord
Luca Miniero, the director of the film, understands that all it takes to make big box office earnings is to take inspiration (or even just translate literally) from the previous French version, in this case, to earn as much as 'The Pianist'. As every respectable syllabus, the famous movie doesn't need an extra explanation about the plot: a post office director determined to move to Milan to further his career, ends up being sent to the south, more precisely to Castellabate, because he pretended to be disabled to get the job. In a scene from the second film, Benvenuti al Nord, the protagonists go to the Osteria del Generale, located in a farmhouse to the east of Milan.
Carlo Cracco per I'am Love
Actually, I'm going to cheat as I'm not going to present a restaurant or location featured in Guadagnino's film, but rather some dishes. The director's attention to detail is renowned, the film follows the events of the Recchi family, set in Milan at the splendid Villa Necchi Campiglio. Nothing is left to chance in the film, from Tilda Swinton's red dress designed by Jil Sander, to the dishes visible in the film prepared by Carlo Cracco.
And today, I have enriched you and thrown arrows at the average Bocconi student, as if I were not one myself.
See you in the next article, ready to spread more curiosities and find new ideas for our midweek outings. Because you know, on Sundays we stock up at 'Papi'.
